Day 9: The Urban Mountaineer
College Hill, Hanover, New Hampshire. 7:00am-8:00am.
Mostly clear, a little chilly
Turns out not that all of the woods in Hanover are public nature reserves - the previous two days were rather lucky.
I tried a new direction today, down the small highway towards Lebanon, and unfortunately never made it far from the traffic noise. All the hills were covered with private property, and the one I finally picked to ascend stopped me halfway up with ominous "no trespassing" signs.
It's funny to me that sometimes urban woods are relatively silent, while the trees right next to houses or busy roads can be rife with chatty birds.
Today's bird called out from what was essentially a large median strip separating two small roads off the highway.
Here is a taste of the backdrop, which is actually kind of fun as a recording.
The aural experience of traffic obscuring birds was the basis of my composing this morning. Here is the valiant bird:
